The short answer
On Max and Ultra, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are part of your plan: you can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on them at no extra cost, and they use your limits faster than other Claude models. On Pro, neither is included in your plan's usage limits: both run on pay-as-you-go usage credits. Fable is not available on the Free plan (Anthropic's help center).
Fable on each plan
Anthropic's help center treats Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 the same way on every plan (Claude Fable models on your plan):
| Plan | Fable 5 and 5.1 | When you reach the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Not available. | Not applicable |
| Pro | Not included in your plan's usage limits. Fable runs on usage credits from the first message. | Usage continues until your monthly spend limit or your prepaid balance runs out (help center) |
| Max and Ultra | Included. Up to 50% of your weekly usage limits, at no extra cost; Fable uses your limits faster than other models. | Keep using Fable with usage credits, or switch to another model |
| Team and seat-based Enterprise | Premium seats: as on Max. Standard seats: as on Pro; on Enterprise, only if your organization has enabled usage credits. | As on Max or Pro, by seat |
| Usage-based Enterprise and the API | Billed at standard API rates. | Not applicable |
On Max and Ultra, the 50% is a share, not extra
The Fable allowance on Max and Ultra sits inside your weekly limit. Anthropic's help center answers the question directly: you can use up to 50% of your weekly limit on Fable models, but your use of other models draws from the same limits and you can never use more than your weekly limit (Claude Fable models on your plan). If Fable takes half of your weekly limit, the other half is what remains for every other model.
Because Fable uses your limits faster than other models (same article), the same work costs more of the week on Fable. Max and Ultra plans have a separate weekly limit for Fable, and Claude Code shares it with claude.ai (Use Claude Code with your Pro, Max, or Ultra plan). When it runs out, you can keep using Fable with usage credits or switch to another model and stay within your plan (Claude Fable models on your plan).
On Pro, Fable runs on usage credits
On Pro and on standard Team seats, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 aren't part of your plan's usage limits; you use them with usage credits (Claude Fable models on your plan). Usage credits are pay-as-you-go at standard API rates, charged separately from your subscription. You turn them on in Settings > Usage, where you can set a monthly spend limit and add funds (Manage usage credits for paid Claude plans).
The alternative Anthropic gives is upgrading to Max or Ultra, which include Fable as a standard part of the plan (help center).
What changed in 2026
- A promotion let you use up to 50% of your weekly subscription limit on Fable 5 at no extra cost. It ended on July 19, 2026 at 11:59:59 PM PT and applied to Fable 5 only (help center).
- When Fable 5 moved to usage credits on Pro and standard Team seats in July 2026, eligible accounts qualified for a one-time credit. There is no equivalent credit for Fable 5.1 (same article).
- Fable 5.1 was never part of the promotion and works like Fable 5 on every plan (same article).
- The Max 20x plan is now called Ultra; existing Max 20x subscribers moved to it automatically, with no price change (What is the Ultra plan?). Fable 5 and 5.1 work on Ultra the same way as on Max (Claude Fable models on your plan).
Fable in Claude Code
Fable 5 needs Claude Code 2.1.170 or later and Fable 5.1 needs 2.1.255 or later; Fable is not available on the Free plan (Claude Fable models on your plan). On Max and Ultra, Claude Code and claude.ai draw from the same Fable weekly limit (Use Claude Code with your Pro, Max, or Ultra plan), so a long coding session on Fable can leave little of it for chat. How to keep track of your Fable usage
On paid plans, claude.ai shows your weekly limits in Settings > Usage, for all models and for Fable if your plan includes it (Usage limit best practices). Usage credits have their own section there with your month-to-date spending (Manage usage credits). Step by step: how to check your Claude usage.
Claude Monitor, a free extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, keeps both in view without opening that page. When your plan includes Fable, it gets its own weekly bar, with desktop alerts at 80% and 95%; the weekly card above it counts down to the reset they share. With usage credits on, a card shows your spend against your monthly limit and your remaining prepaid balance. Your usage data stays in your browser: no account, no analytics, no telemetry (privacy policy).
