The short answer
The session limit resets every five hours on Free and paid plans: Anthropic's help center documents it for paid plans and for the Free plan. On Pro and Max, the weekly limit resets once a week at a fixed time assigned to your account (Pro, Max). On paid plans, claude.ai shows the next reset in Settings > Usage; Claude Monitor counts down to each reset in your toolbar.
The 5-hour session
Paid plans have a session limit that resets every five hours (Anthropic's help center). The Free plan has a session-based usage limit that also resets every five hours (Get started with Claude). Your usage of claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit (same article).
On paid plans, Settings > Usage shows how much of the session you have used and the time remaining (Usage limit best practices).
For what counts against the session, see Claude usage limits explained.
The weekly limit
Pro and Max plans have a weekly limit that applies across all models (Pro, Max). It resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account (What is the Pro plan?). Per the same article, your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude. You receive the full weekly allowance each cycle.
Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable (Use Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan). It resets once a week as well (Manage usage credits). Anthropic doesn't publish which day an account gets; Settings > Usage shows yours.
Usage credits and resets
With usage credits enabled, your work continues on credits after you reach a limit instead of stopping (How do usage and length limits work?). Credits do not change the timing: the session still resets every five hours and the weekly limits once a week (Manage usage credits). If you upgrade, the new plan's limits apply right away (How do usage and length limits work?).
Claude Code
On Pro and Max, Claude Code shares the five-hour session and weekly limits with claude.ai (Anthropic's help center), so the reset times match. If you reach the session limit partway through a response, Claude Code may keep working briefly to finish the step in progress (same article). That usage counts toward your weekly limit, once per weekly period on Pro and each session on Max; it is rolling out gradually.
Inside Claude Code, /usage shows the plan usage bars (Claude Code docs). With an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set, Claude Code bills the API instead of your subscription (help center). More on Claude Code usage limits.
Where claude.ai shows the next reset
On Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, Settings > Usage shows progress bars for the session and weekly limits (Usage limit best practices). Per that article, the session bar shows the time remaining. The weekly section shows when the limit resets, for all models and for Fable if your plan includes it. Step by step: how to check your Claude usage.
Free accounts see nothing there: when we checked a Free account on October 6, 2026, the page showed no usage figures. The Free session limit still exists (help center); with its usage bar on, Claude Monitor reads the reset time from each reply. Details on Claude usage on the Free plan.
How Claude Monitor helps
Claude Monitor reads the same limits claude.ai reports and shows a countdown to every reset: session, weekly and per-model. It alerts you at 80% and 95% of a limit, and the toolbar badge shows where you stand without opening anything. Your usage data stays in your browser: no account, no analytics, no telemetry (privacy policy). Installation steps are in the setup guide.
Questions
How long does it take for the Claude usage limit to reset?
The session limit resets every five hours on Free and paid plans, per Anthropic's help center (How do usage and length limits work?, Get started with Claude). On Pro and Max, the weekly limit resets once a week at a fixed time assigned to your account (Pro, Max).
When does the Claude weekly limit reset?
On Pro and Max, once a week, at a fixed time assigned to your account (What is the Pro plan?, What is the Max plan?). The day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude. claude.ai shows the next reset in Settings > Usage, and Claude Monitor counts down to it.
Does the Claude Free plan limit reset?
Yes. Anthropic's help center documents a session-based usage limit on the Free plan that resets every five hours (Get started with Claude). claude.ai does not show the reset to Free accounts: when we checked a Free account on October 6, 2026, its Settings > Usage showed no usage. Claude Monitor reads the reset time from each reply once its usage bar is on.
Does the Claude Code limit reset separately?
No. On Pro and Max, Claude Code draws from the same five-hour session and weekly limits as claude.ai, so the reset times are the same (Use Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan). Inside Claude Code, /usage shows the plan usage bars (Claude Code docs).
Do usage credits change when the limit resets?
No. With usage credits enabled, your work continues on credits after you reach a limit. The session limit still resets every five hours and the weekly limits once a week (Manage usage credits for paid Claude plans).
Can I reset my Claude usage limit early?
When you hit a limit, Anthropic's help center lists waiting for the reset, upgrading, or usage credits (How do usage and length limits work?). The Pro and Max plan articles mention a limit reset that sets the session or weekly limit back to full; the note is quoted in the section on where claude.ai shows the next reset.
